What to Expect on a DOT Physical

DOT

The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires all commercial drivers to have a physical before operating a commercial vehicle. What happens during a DOT physical? Our Bay City Holt Chiropractic & Acupuncture team is here to give you the lowdown.

What Is a DOT Physical?

A DOT physical is a medical examination required by the Department of Transportation for all commercial drivers. The exam is designed to ensure that drivers are physically and mentally fit to operate a commercial vehicle. During the DOT physical, the doctor will check your:

  • Blood pressure
  • Vision
  • Height and weight
  • Heart rate
  • Respiration rate

The doctor will also ask about your medical history and whether you’re taking any medications that could affect your driving ability.

Who Needs DOT Physical?

The DOT physical is valid for up to 24 months, but it can be shorter if the doctor finds you have a medical condition that could affect your driving ability. If you’re a commercial driver, you must have a DOT physical. These drivers include:

  • Trucks
  • Buses
  • Taxis
  • Limousines
  • Ambulances

What to Expect on the Day of Your DOT Physical

When you go for your DOT physical, you should bring your driver’s license and any other medical information that the doctor might need, such as a list of your medications. You can expect the physician to take about 30 minutes.

The doctor will first check your blood pressure, vision, and heart rate. Then, they’ll ask you about your medical history and whether you’re taking any medications. Finally, they’ll check your height and weight to ensure you meet the requirements for operating a commercial vehicle.

After the physical, the doctor will give you a DOT medical card if they determine that you’re physically and mentally fit to drive. If the doctor finds you have a medical condition that could affect your driving ability, they may give you a conditional medical card. This extra card means you’ll need to follow certain restrictions, such as not driving for more than eight hours per day or not driving at night.
